Rockit First Case Prototype

I got the first case prototype in today. It’s definitely a work in progress, but the general idea is there. Click through for a big picture and a discussion of the changes I need to make before I call it done.

It’s missing knobs because the knobs that I bought don’t fit. I’ve got to fix the fonts and their placement, fix some hole sizes, and fix the fit of how the whole thing fits together. I’m also going to look at other materials to reduce the fingerprinting, maybe Delron. So, I’ve got some work to do, but you can rest assured that the case is high on the priority list and I’ll have it done soon. I’m starting on the changes and I’ll get another sample. On the upside, check out that awesome logo! The lady of the house does some nice work.

I also received a case design from one of you today and I’m happy to see people putting some work in to make Rockit even better. It’s going to have a kid’s keyboard built in and a pitch wheel. Take a look:

  1. Looks like it’s getting there.. The finger print issue is a PITA, the only remedy I have found is the textured acrylic (http://midiot.net/s1/blk4.jpg), deltron can have a rough finish so I dont know how well that will work, definitely get a material sample before ordering a set. I’ll be working on my version this weekend as well… Logo looks dope.

  2. If you want to go with black, I mean there are lot of black synths out there, I think the textured vinyl gives the enclosure a nice thinkpadish look. The layout is fixed but perhaps you could group the controls by connecting them with lines ala OTOmachine Biscuit instead of frames? And the labels really has to be moved away from the holes to make room for knobs and even caps for the buttons. And I like bigger lettering.
    Who is producing the enclosures?
All in all I think the logo is well thought out and you’re doing a great job, keep it up!

    • I haven’t decided on black yet. It was just the first prototype. I’m going to look at other materials and colors. The lettering is going to get bigger for sure. Pretty much all the engraving will change except the logo. That logo is the one bright spot of the whole thing. It was made by my wife and she spent a lot of time on it and I’m glad it shows.

  3. What about the 7 segment display? Did I miss something? Anyways, this looks like a good start and I really like the alt enclosure/keyboard idea.

I myself am working on something very different; embedding this and a WTPA? in a a briefcase. It’ll be my little 8-bit box 😉

Pics whenever that’s looking like anything…

  4. Well it loooks so so right now to be frank. Too dark. smudgy and low budget.
Huge whack of empty wasted space in the lower left corner. Your logo should be 100-200-300% bigger. Use a crazier font.

Make the case in a lighter colour or clear acrylic.

You need a line drawn as a graphpic between the pots to show the curve of the envelope since you chose those locations for the pots.

You need to have some fun with it graphically. I like clear acrylic with engraving as it shows off your pcb design.

For example the suonio II (I have a I) has a really boring new cover plate, I hate it.
